The Genesis of Mercer Standard
Mercer Standard was born out of a desire to see American garment manufacturing reclaim its place at the pinnacle of international design. For over a century, neighborhoods like Mercer Street in New York, the textile valleys of Reading and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the knitting mills of North Carolina were the world’s epicenter of durable apparel.
When fast-fashion offshored quality in favor of disposable garments, centuries of artisanal know-how were threatened with extinction. Mercer Standard was created to partner directly with the remaining multi-generational mills, breathing new life into vintage shuttle looms, circular knitting cylinders, and bespoke tailoring benches.

- Domestic Milling First: We manufacture over 85% of our collection in the United States, utilizing partner mills in Italy, Scotland, and Japan only for regional mastercrafts (e.g., Biella virgin wools and Scottish cashmeres).
- Function Over Trend: We do not produce seasonal filler. Every trench coat, chore jacket, and sock is engineered to endure harsh elements and improve with every year of wear.
- Science-Backed Natural Yarns: We combine heritage long-staple cottons with pure aerospace-grade silver threads that eliminate bacteria and odor at the molecular level.
Ventile® Weatherproof Cotton
Our signature trench coats and storm jackets are tailored from 100% all-cotton Ventile®. Originally created in Lancashire during World War II for fighter pilots flying over the icy North Atlantic, Ventile® uses an ultra-tight weave of long-staple cotton that expands when exposed to moisture, forming an impenetrable barrier against wind and torrential rain without requiring synthetic plastic coatings.
Pure Silver-Spun Knitting
Every pair of Mercer Standard Silver Crew and Retro Socks features pure ionic silver permanently bonded to high-grade combed cotton. Silver naturally releases positively charged ions that neutralize odor-causing bacteria before it can develop. The result is a sock that stays fresh through coast-to-coast flights, grueling workdays, and mountain trails alike.
